Westward Ho! and the North Devon coast

Westward Ho! has a long wide sandy beach, backed by a pebble ridge, which protects the Burrows Nature Reserve and England’s oldest established golf links behind it. At the opposite end of the sands the town has a few of the popular resort amenities, including a pub, restaurants and gift shops.

To the east lies Northam, which boasts an excellent wet fish shop, and has the nearest post office. Close by is the picturesque village of Appledore, with quaint cobbled streets, some very nice pubs and good restaurants.

Entertainment Sports & Leisure

Northam has an excellent indoor swimming pool and an outdoor activity centre at Skern Lodge, which offers many activities including canoeing, surfing and abseiling among others.

For the children young and old, a trip to the Big Sheep is essential if you are in this part of the country. They promise a big family fun day and certainly try very hard to deliver.

Appledore and Instow are both very close and Instow in particular is very pretty, with several good restaurants and pubs.

Further afield is Clovelly Heritage village, Hartland Quay, Hartland Abbey and Docton Mills. There are several National Trust properties nearby, one especially beautiful site is Riversmeet House.

Nature and bird watching is very popular in Northam Burrows.

One of my visitors discovered a very nice old time dancing group nearby.
